Once upon a time, in a small village in Andhra Pradesh, there lived a poor Brahmin named Somaiah. He was honest but struggled to feed his family. Every day, he would go door to door for alms, but he barely got enough.

Just then, he saw a little earthen pot lying near the roots of the tree. Curious, he picked it up. To his shock, there was nothing inside, but when he turned it upside down, a single pappu (cooked moong dal) fell out. He was hungry, so he ate it. As soon as he put the pot back on the ground, another dal fell out! Then another, and another.
The pot broke into a hundred pieces.
One afternoon, after a long, tiring day with almost no food, he sat under a large banyan tree. He prayed to God, "Oh Lord, why am I always suffering in poverty? Please show me some mercy."
For a few days, he was happy. He ate his fill of dal every day. But slowly, greed began to creep into his mind. "This pot only gives one dal at a time. It is so slow. What if I can get many dals at once? Maybe I can break it open and find the secret inside. Perhaps there is a treasure of many dals hidden in the wall of the pot." "Atyāśa dukkha mūlam" – Greed is the root of suffering. Be content with what you have, or you may lose everything. (చాలు నని తెలుసుకోండి, లేకపోతే చేతిలోనిది కూడా పోతుంది.)
