On average, Earth is very slowly moving away from the Sun, not closer. However, the distance varies slightly over time due to orbital mechanics and tidal forces. 1. The Short Answer (for general audiences) Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle — it’s an ellipse. We are closest to the Sun in early January (perihelion, ~91.4 million miles / 147.1 million km) and farthest in early July (aphelion, ~94.5 million miles / 152.1 million km). Over very long timescales, the average distance is increasing by about 1.5 centimeters (0.6 inches) per year — mainly because the Sun is losing mass.

If you hear someone claim Earth is falling into the Sun, you can confidently correct them: the opposite is true, and we have billions of years before any real danger arises.

| Effect | Impact on Earth-Sun distance | |--------|-------------------------------| | (via fusion & solar wind) | Weakens Sun’s gravity → Earth spirals outward ~1.5 cm/year | | Tidal interactions (Sun’s gravity on Earth) | Very small effect, also pushes Earth outward | | Gravitational perturbations (other planets, especially Jupiter) | Cyclic variations of ~±3–5% over 100k-year cycles, but no net inward drift |

The list is in my free time gradually replenished.
