A Storied Past The Parkway first opened its doors in 1931, during the golden age of cinema. Designed with an Art Deco flair typical of the era, it offered Depression-era audiences a glamorous escape. For decades, it operated as a neighborhood movie palace, eventually transitioning to a second-run and discount theater—a beloved institution where generations of Minneapolis residents grew up watching $1 movies.
After closing in 2013, the theater faced an uncertain future until a passionate group of local investors, musicians, and preservationists stepped in. Following an extensive renovation, the Parkway reopened in 2018, reborn as a premier independent live music and events venue while carefully preserving its vintage soul.
