The funeral for James Ellroy’s fictional stand-in was, predictably, a disaster before the first canapé hit the table. Roman had spent the morning trying to work his “hard-boiled noir” screenplay into the eulogy, muttering about “the dame who walked in with a corpse’s smile.” Casey kept trying to pitch her improv group’s “tragicomic funeral revue” to actual mourners. The real Ellroy showed up halfway through, drunk, demanding whiskey and accusing the catering staff of being “the real criminals” for under-salting the sliders. Roman took this as a compliment. Ron tried to wrangle a “synergy meeting” between Ellroy and a local funeral home sponsor. Within ten minutes, the chocolate fountain had been tipped over (Lydia’s fault), and someone had lit a screenplay on fire as an offering. Just another Tuesday at Party Down

In the chaos, Henry looked at Casey, who looked at him, and for a second the world stopped being a farce. Then a mourner threw a dinner roll at Kyle, and the moment was gone.
