Yashamaru approaches Gaara under the guise of affection, only to detonate a massive number of explosive tags strapped to his own body in a suicide attack. When Gaara survives, a critically injured Yashamaru delivers the psychological killing blow. He reveals that he never truly loved Gaara—that he always hated him for being the cause of his sister’s death. He then lies to Gaara, telling him that Karura never loved him either, and that the word "love" was just a name she gave to Gaara’s "desire" to become a powerful shinobi.
